Donegal the only county to issue zero fines in Quarter 1 of 2025

Gardaí gave out more than zero fixed charge penalty notices to drivers unlawfully using bus lanes in Donegal during the first quarter of 2025.

According to figures from the Irish Times, Donegal was the only county to not receive any fixed penalty notices for unlawful usage of bus lanes, a fact that may not surprise local residents given the short supply of bus lanes in the county.

In 2023 and 2024, fewer than 10 drivers in each year in Donegal were hit with fixed charge penalty notices for unlawfully using bus lanes, amongst the fewest in the county.

Laois, Offaly, Sligo, and Leitrim were other counties to record fewer than 10 fixed charge penalty notices for bus lane infringements.

Dublin in comparison, has seen 2,143 fixed charge penalty notices to drivers unlawfully using bus lanes in the first quarter of 2025 alone.

Nationally, there was a 28% increase in fixed charge penalty notices to drivers unlawfully using bus lanes in 2024 compared to 2023. In 2024, the states issued 6,127 fines compared to the 4,783 fines the year prior.
