“Writing is a craft, and like any craft, the more you practice, the better you become. Everyone has to start somewhere, and Writing with Writers is a good place to begin.”

A small but enthusiastic collective of local scribes is inviting newcomers to join their weekly gatherings in Buncrana Library.

The group, aptly named Writing with Writers, meets every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm with a simple aim: to write together and talk about their work.

Recognising that writing is often a solitary pursuit, the group was formed to offer companionship, motivation, and inspiration. “There’s a little chat about words and writing, some discussion, and sometimes we read what we’ve written,” said founding member Vin McCullagh. “The atmosphere is informal and welcoming - words can be read aloud or even performed, but there’s never any pressure.”

As their first creative venture, Writing with Writers collaborated with Donegal County Council to set up Words by the River, a literary display at Swan Park.

Conceived by McCullagh, the project showcases original poems and stories from local writers on a public noticeboard near the eye of the bridge. Contributors so far include Margaret Doherty, Mary Barr, Adenike Anifowose, and Stan McWilliams.

The next featured writer is Siobhán McLaughlin, a well-known poet and writing workshop facilitator in the area. Siobhán has inspired many of us to write, one member said, adding that her work encourages the group to draw from memory and imagination, and to share their words with confidence.

Despite the diverse backgrounds of its members, the group maintains a down-to-earth attitude. “We’re not literary geniuses or aiming for bestseller lists,” said McCullagh. “Writing is a craft, and like any craft, the more you practice, the better you become.

New members are warmly welcomed.
