Scoil Íosagáin hosted the first Féíle Ficheall chess tournament to take place in Donegal last week. A total of 80 students took part representing four schools, Scoil Íosagáin, Buncrana, Scoil Cholmcille, Newton, St. Brigid's National School, Glenmakee and St. Patrick's Boys School, Carndonagh. Each of the students played six rounds of chess. Each school group was presented with a framed certificate of participation to celebrate the promotion of chess in their school. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was wonderful to see them playing and chatting with children they hadn't previously met before. Ficheall is a non-profit, voluntary organisation founded by primary school teachers to promote the social and cognitive benefits of chess for students. A second tournament took place the following day at Scoil Taobhóige in Lifford The Donegal Education Centre will be facilitating chess courses for teachers interested in learning how to play and teach chess to their students this summer.
