Inishowen has the highest rate of approval of planning applications in Donegal.

More planning applications were made in the Inishowen Municipal District than in any of the county’s other municipal districts (MDs) in 2022, figures released by Donegal County Council show.

There were 570 applications received in the Inishowen MD, compared to 596 in the Letterkenny-Milford MD, 422 in the Glenties MD, 368 in the Donegal MD and 239 in Lifford-Stranorlar.

Despite having more applications, Inishowen had 12 fewer refusals than the Letterkenny-Milford MD, which had 50. There were 29 refusals in the Donegal MD and 27 each in the Glenties and Lifford-Stranolar MDs.

In Inishowen, 468 applications were granted, 38 were refused, 209 were deferred and 85 were invalid. Some 299 applications were decided in less than 56 days.

Executive planner Killian Smith told the latest meeting of the Inishowen Municipal District that Inishowen had the highest approval rate in the county at 82%. The refusal rate was also well below average at 6.7%.

No planning enforcement cases were closed in 2002 in the municipal district and two new cases were opened. The council is dealing with 299 outstanding enforcement cases.

Figures released last month by the Planning Regulator for 2021 show 3.5% of planning application decisions made by Donegal County Council were appealed to An Bord Pleanála, of which 48.6% were reversed. The national average rate of appeal in 2021 was 6.7% and the average reversal rate was 27.7%.
