Reports are starting to filter through that a body has been recovered from the Shannon River during the search for a man missing since late December.

Although gardai have yet to confirm the news a number of social media posts from groups involved in the search have detailed that a body has been recovered.

Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery posted on Facebook: "Shortly after 10:00hrs this morning, While assisting on an ongoing search, The Boyne Fishermen’s Rescue and Recovery Service recovered the body of the local missing male in Carrick on Shannon. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends."

On another Facebook page Sharon Garland, who, on behalf of the family, set up a fundraising page to help meet the costs of the volunteers who have been helping with the search noted: "This morning, in Carrick-on-Shannon, on day 21, the search and recovery concluded. Thanks to the Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery for the dignity and respect they showed for the young man and the family and to all the other services who have travelled from near and far to assist. Also, to the community spirit and support for the family and to everyone who has come to the quay wall with supplies and donations. A massive thank you to all the hospitality providers that offered to assist and Jim Glancy for looking after the crews so well for the past few weeks.

RIP

She also notes that the gofundme page set up during the search is still accepting donations - "please donate what you can to help all these amazing services continue," she said. The donation page can be found at https://gofund.me/f5c92dd1 An amazing €23,410 has already been raised.

Our deepest condolences are extended to the family and friends of the deceased and thank you to everyone involved in the search over the last 21 days.
