Councillor Des Guckian proposed in a notice of motion to the December meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District meeting that the Heritage Officer, Sarah Malone, investigate the possibility of reinstating and/or replacing the milestones all along the old T3 /N4 roadway from the Longford border to the centre of Carrick-on- Shannon, including what is now called the L1601.

A reply from the Director of Services for Economic Development, Planning, Environment and Transportation stated, “Milestones were once common across Co Leitrim but are now rare and those remaining in situ form a significant part of our county's heritage.

“All existing milestones, regardless of their designation status, should be protected and maintained to ensure their preservation.

“There are a small number of milestones remaining such as those at Dromod, Drumsna and at The Market Yard in Carrick-on-Shannon.

“With regard to the proposal to reinstate all original milestones, a number of areas would need to be explored including the identification of a funding source, road safety considerations, maintenance, etc.

“It is respectfully not considered a matter within the remit of the Heritage Officer to pursue as the vast majority of such structures no longer exist.”
