Cattle grid needed to keep mountain livestock off the public road

Sinn Féin Councillor Padraig Fallon asked for progress on the feasibility of installing a cattle grid at Aughavoghil, Kinlough during the December meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District meeting.
Cllr Fallon said the issue was raised before and both he and Cllr Warnock met with landowners and put forward some suitable locations to Senior Area Engineer Eric Gilroy.
Cllr Warnock supported this and said “there should be progress at this stage, as it is going on three- four years.”
The two councillors said they met with Manorhamilton Cycle Club who said they had no problem with the location of the cattlegrid.
Cllr Fallon said livestock coming off the commonage mountain are “a hazard to motorists on the road.”
He said this situation worsens in winter when animals migrate down from the mountain in search of shelter lower down.
Council Engineer Eric Gilroy pointed out that the Council is still investigating the best location for a possible cattle grid and if there are any other options open to them.
Mr Gilroy said he would meet with the councillors and landowners again to finalise the issue.
