A road safety scheme is being designed for Shannon Roundabout, with existing road markings set to be reviewed following concerns over lane confusion and congestion.

A road safety improvement scheme for the Shannon Roundabout in Carrick-on-Shannon is being designed, it was heard at a recent meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District.

Cllr Cormac Flynn raised concerns about the existing road markings at the roundabout, highlighting issues around safety and traffic flow.

His motion stated, “I ask that Transport Infrastructure Ireland, through Leitrim County Council, review the existing road markings at the roundabout serving the old bypass from the east, with consideration given to extending the lane markings through the roundabout to provide a dedicated swept lane for left-turning traffic onto the old bypass removing ambiguity created by the markings being contrary to the traditional rules of the road.”

Cllr Flynn spoke of uncertainty among motorists regarding the left-turning lane for traffic approaching from the Longford direction, which is intended only for vehicles travelling into town towards the Landmark Hotel.

“The lane markings, as currently laid out, can be interpreted differently from what many drivers understand to be the traditional rules of the road approach to roundabout use,” said Cllr Flynn.

“As a result, motorists can find themselves unsure of which lane they should be in, particularly when turning left onto the old bypass. This uncertainty can lead to hesitation, abrupt lane changes and frustration for drivers, none of which contributes to a safe road environment.”

He noted that extending the lane markings right through the roundabout would remove any doubt about the intended direction of travel, making it clear that motorists in that lane should only turn left.

The latter part of Cllr Flynn’s motion focused more on traffic congestion than road safety. The motion continued, “Furthermore, that the Council examine extending the approach lane markings back towards the Tesco roundabout to facilitate vehicles intending to turn left onto the old bypass, reducing traffic congestion, particularly during peak school collection periods where traffic backs up.”

Speaking at the meeting, he said, “this is particularly important given the volume of traffic using this route every day, including parents collecting children, local businesses, commuters and visitors to the town.”

He added, “It only happens once a day for nine months of the year but it does hold up traffic considerably. There’s enough room for two lanes the whole way.”

District engineer Emma Donohoe confirmed that the Road Design Office is currently reviewing the road and that the existing road markings will be assessed as part of the process.

A response from the Roads Department stated, “The Road Design Office are currently progressing the design of a road safety improvement scheme along this section of road. As part of the scheme, the existing road markings will be reviewed and upgraded as necessary.”
