Volunteering has significant benefits for both individuals and our communities and people who volunteer report feeling an increased sense of belonging to their communities and an improved sense of personal wellbeing. There are many ways to get involved: from helping out at a local event, giving your time to a charity whose cause you’re passionate about or becoming a board member at your local Credit Union.placeholder image

Leitrim Volunteer Centre Manager,Josephine Stroker, Manager commented, “Every action, no matter how small, has an impact. By giving just a few hours every month, people can make a real difference in their community. National Volunteering Week is our chance to shine a light on the impact volunteers have on our communities and on the benefits volunteering brings to the volunteers themselves. It’s also an opportunity to inspire more people to volunteer, which is why we’re inviting everyone to join hundreds of others and take the 26 for ’26 pledge on our website.”

National Volunteering Week will be anchored by a digital campaign sharing personal volunteer stories and showcasing the different ways people can get involved. The campaign is supported by sponsor the Irish League of Credit Unions and partner Healthy Ireland.

According to Brendan Jenkins, President of the Irish League of Credit Unions, “We are proud to sponsor National Volunteering Week, which shines a light on the extraordinary contribution volunteers make across every aspect of society. Credit unions, like so many community-based organisations, are built on that spirit of volunteerism and a shared commitment to keeping communities strong, connected, and thriving.”

Minister of State for Public Health, Wellbeing and the National Drugs Strategy, Jennifer Murnane O’Connor T.D., said “Volunteering strengthens communities by bringing people together, reducing isolation, and building a stronger sense of belonging. It helps communities respond to local needs that services alone may not be able to meet—whether that is supporting school activities, improving our shared spaces, helping at community events, or offering practical support to our older neighbours.placeholder image

Building and maintaining healthy communities is part of daily life, and volunteering is one of the most practical ways to contribute. If you are able, consider taking the 26 for 26 pledge by volunteering 26 hours over the year—just a small amount of time each month that can add up to a meaningful impact for others and for you”.

National Volunteering Week runs from 18th – 24th May and further information can be found here.
