Leitrim/ Roscommon Science Week kicked off on Monday evening as 60 children came together to construct a 13-metre-long, 3-metre-high cable-stayed bridge.
The hands-on engineering event, held at Aughnasheelin Community Centre, marked the launch of this year's Science Week programme, Ripple Effect, which explores the theme Water: From Molecule to Ocean.
The workshop was delivered by bridge engineer Jamie Graham, who introduced the children to the principles of bridge design and construction before challenging them to build the giant structure themselves. Once completed, the young engineers had the opportunity to put their work to the ultimate test by walking across the bridge they had built.
Leitrim Roscommon Science Week runs from 8–15 November, with a packed programme of interactive workshops, science shows, talks and family activities taking place across both counties.
The celebrations will culminate in a Family Science Day at Drumhierny Woodland Hideaway on Sunday, 15 November, featuring hands-on activities, demonstrations and workshops for the whole family.
