Tonight, Wednesday, April 19, Carrick-on-Shannon & District Historical Society is pleased to present a talk by local historian and well-known trad musician, Dr Michael (Mick) Mulvey on the subject of Irish migration to the UK during the post-war period of the 40s/50s/60s.

Dr Mick Mulvey will deliver the lecture.

During this period - often referred to as the “post-war wave of Irish immigration” - it is estimated that thousands of Irish men and women emigrated to the UK primarily due to economic factors such as high unemployment and limited job prospects at the time. It is a period well known and remembered by the Irish.

The talk is entitled “The Connacht Connection: How North Connacht's Migrant Builders Contributed to Post War London. “

It will look at the way in which Irish migrant workers from the five counties of Connacht (with a focus on Leitrim) migrated to, settled and established business and social communities in and around London during and after WWII.

The illustrated talk will look at the socio-economic, cultural aspects and lived experiences of these migrant builders.

Venue: St. George's Heritage Centre, Church Lane, Carrick-on-Shannon, 8pm. Admission €5, free to Society Members. Info: 086 067 5283.
