Increased palliative care services for Leitrim people

Minister Marian Harkin has welcomed the opening of the new inpatient unit at North West Hospice in Sligo
Minister Marian Harkin has welcomed the opening of the new inpatient unit at North West Hospice in Sligo, which will increase capacity from 7 to 12 beds and strengthen palliative care services across the North West.
The new facility, completed by HSE West and North West, opened early this week. Eight beds will open initially, with capacity increasing to 12 on a phased basis.
“I warmly welcome the opening of this new unit at North West Hospice. This is an important development for Sligo and the wider North West, strengthening the hospice’s ability to provide specialist, compassionate care to patients and support to their families when they need it most,” Minister Harkin stated.
“North West Hospice provides an invaluable service to our community. The additional beds and patient-centred facilities will help meet the needs of people requiring palliative care, ensuring dignity, comfort and respect remain at the heart of their care,” she added.
Minister Harkin went on to pay tribute to the staff of the hospice.
“I want to pay tribute to the dedicated staff, healthcare professionals and volunteers who provide this essential service. I also commend North West Hospice Charity and the many supporters throughout the region whose generosity has helped make this development possible.
“The next phase, which will provide enhanced facilities for the multidisciplinary team and a day service for outpatient reviews, is another important step in strengthening palliative care provision in our region,” she stated.
The project began in March 2024, with a strong emphasis on patient comfort and creating an environment that reflects the hospice’s values of compassion, excellence and respect.
The second phase of the development is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2027.
