A review of worn road markings across Carrick-on-Shannon is to be scheduled after concerns that learner drivers are being marked down on driving tests.

Faded road markings have been impacting learner drivers in Carrick-on-Shannon, with some losing marks on their driving tests, a meeting of the Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District has heard.

Cllr Paddy Farrell asked that the District Engineer reinstate road markings on all roads throughout Carrick-on-Shannon. “As Carrick-on-Shannon is a driving test centre and routes around and through the town are used on driving tests, the provision of road markings would be very beneficial for those learning to drive in and around the town, including all those who take their driving test in Carrick-on-Shannon,” stated Cllr Farrell’s motion.

“It’s having an impact on learner drivers being marked down on their tests,” he said.

Cllr Farrell also noted that there are “a lot of potholes” especially by the hospital, and a problem with some ramps on Castlecara Road.

A response from the Roads Department confirmed that a review will take place of road markings in Carrick-on-Shannon.

“Leitrim County Council will schedule in a review of the road markings across Carrick-on-Shannon,” stated the reply.

It also stated that works to reinstate worn or missing markings will be prioritised based on condition. The worn markings will be programmed into the upcoming road maintenance schedule to be completed subject to contractor availability and council resources.

Bye-laws will require renewing of certain parking bays. “All junctions should have either a stop sign, or stop road markings,” the response concluded.

The motion was unanimously approved by councillors in Carrick-on-Shannon MD.

Cllr Flynn also noted that the pedestrian crossing on Castlecara Road was patched up recently and asked if there was a long-term plan for it.

District Engineer Emma Donohoe confirmed the crossing is going to be relocated as part of works for the recreational and multi-sport campus. She said that is why it was patched up, as in summer 2027 it will be moved slightly towards the N4 direction and fully upgraded.
