Leitrim Chef says 9% VAT rate would be ‘breather’ for small businesses

The comments came as Hanifa spoke on Shannonside about the new government's announcement that they would reduce the VAT rate from 13% back to the rate it was during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Local Leitrim Chef Sham Hanifa has called for the government to deliver the long-promised reduced VAT rate of 9%.

Hanifa, who owns My Kitchen in Carrick on Shannon, joined the chorus of business owners and organisations in the hospitality sector who have been calling for the government to enact this move in recent years.

The current VAT rate is considered by many to be putting too much pressure on businesses in the sector due to the increased strain their bottom lines are already experiencing due to inflation, soaring electricity costs, and the price of material heading being on the rise.
