Leitrim County Council notes there are over 30 disabled parking bays in Carrick-on-Shannon

Leitrim County Council has pointed out that there are already over 30 marked disabled parking bays in Carrick-on-Shannon, one fifth of which are in the vicinity of The Dock arts centre and St George's Terrace.
The comments came after Cllr Finola Armstrong-McGuire brought forward a motion seeking additional disabled parking bays in the St George's Terrace, The Dock and quayside area of the town.
Addressing the Carrick-on-Shannon MD meeting she said that people attending “events in the Dock are greatly restricted by the minimal number of bays marked for those with restricted movements.”
She said she had been contacted by a number of people with mobility issues who said there is a need for more disabled parking bays.
She asked that the existing bays also be “clearly marked and policed”.
However, responding to the motion, District Engineer, Darragh O'Boyle explained that there are 31 disabled parking spaces in Carrick-on-Shannon at the moment.
He also stressed these spaces are only for disabled badge holders and not meant for elderly people with mobility issues who are not in possession of an approved permit.
“These were painted and signed in accordance with the regulations at great cost. Any new car parking development will adhere to this regulations and provide disabled car parking bays in accordance with Leitrim's county development plan,” he noted.
It was also observed that there are already six disabled parking bays adjacent to the St George's Terrace and The Dock area of the town.
Mr O'Boyle said there are no plans to reline any more car park spaces in Carrick-on-Shannon.
