Leitrim property tax set to increase to meet the county's capital investment plan commitments

Leitrim’s property tax will increase in 2027 following a vote at Leitrim County Council last week.

The motion to increase the property tax by around €10 a year was proposed at a meeting of Leitrim County Council and received a unanimous vote of approval.

The property tax increase was proposed to raise funds to match the needs of the county's capital investment plan.

The capital investment plan, worth over €60 million to the county per year, funds local projects and is largely funded by the central government; however, Leitrim County Council must provide around 10% of the funds itself to qualify for the rest of the investment.

As a result, for the next four years, the county's property tax will increase by €9.50 a year for 75% of householders in Leitrim, going from just over €109 a year to nearly €119.

“All of the councillors have said we would prefer even not to have them paying that extra €9.50, as we know that a lot of people are hard-pressed financially these days, but at the same time do you lose out on 90% of funding for projects that are going to make a huge difference to communities and that's the decision we had to make,” said Councillor and Caoirleach of Leitrim County Council Mary Bohan.

Leitrim County Council Chief Executive Joseph Gilhooly described the success of the investment programme as “unprecedented”, saying that the funds that it made available unlocked important opportunities for the county.

The projects covered by the investment plan include the development of a new Library in Dromahair, access to the sea at Tullaghan and a playground, and the construction of a Water Sports activity building and car park at Acres Lake, Drumshanbo.

Future projects will include Carrigallen Business Campus and The Exchange in Drumshanbo.
