Leitrim quarry seeks planning permission for 25 year expansion and new facilities

A quarry in North Leitrim is seeking 25-year expansion approval from Leitrim County Council which includes new buildings, soil import, and site restoration plans.
A Leitrim quarry is seeking approval to expand operations over the next 25 years, including the construction of new facilities and plans for site restoration.
David K Trotter and Sons Ltd, based in Nure, Lurganboy, have applied to Leitrim County Council for planning permission to continue quarry operations and build two new structures. The application proposes continuing use of the existing 3.4-hectare quarry and reopening 3.9 hectares of previously approved but partially mined land, which would be extracted down to a specified depth.
Additionally, the quarry is set to expand by 2.9 hectares, while existing buildings and yard areas used for pre-cast concrete, concrete batching, and machinery storage will continue to operate.
The two new buildings planned include a 1,592 m² shed to cover pre-stressed beds and provide storage, and a smaller 82 m² building for equipment storage, a compressor house, and an electrical substation near the ready-mix plant.
The proposal also involves importing approximately 70,000 m³ (125,000 tonnes) of uncontaminated soil to construct a screening berm to the south of the extraction area and to help restore parts of the quarry following extraction.
All related ancillary works would also continue, including material processing and stockpiling, workshops, site offices, and block yards.
The total application area covers around 20 hectares, with operations planned for 25 years and an additional two years for final site restoration.
A decision from Leitrim County Council is expected on February 8, 2026.
