Lighting and sewage issues in Leitrim raised at meeting

Calls have been made to upgrade the street lighting on Church Street in Ballinamore, where bulbs were replaced in 2024.
Cllr Róisín Kenny asked the Council to consider upgrades to the street lighting, following several complaints from residents.
“There are a number of visually impaired people who live on and use the street regularly and residents have requested that the lights be upgraded to those with a double bulb,” her motion stated.
In response, the Roads department noted that low-lux lights on Church Street were replaced last year with new LED fixtures.
However, district engineer Darragh O’Boyle, told the meeting he would consult with a contractor about the possibility of further increasing the brightness.
Cllr Kenny also raised a motion asking if there have been any plans to extend the Ballinamore town sewage system out the Newtowngore road towards Garadice, after some residents believed progress was underway.
Council officials responded that they were unaware of any such plans.
“Public water supply and sewerage is now a matter to be addressed to Uisce Éireann. The MD can consider the referral of this matter to Uisce Eireann for a reply,” an official reply stated.
Cllr Paddy O’Rourke criticised the high cost of sewage extensions, saying that unless there’s a significant policy shift from Uisce Éireann or instruction from central Government, “we could ever see small scale sewage extensions carried out close to towns and villages.”
“Gone are the days when small centres of population could hope to have sewage extensions because of the cost,” he said.
