Masters in the medals in Athlone as young star shine in Carrick
Leitrim athletes young and old excelled last Sunday in indoors competition with four national titles coming home to the county at the 123.ie Athletics Ireland Masters championships in Athlone as the next generation produced some great performances at the Leitrim Juvenile Indoors in Carrick Sports Complex.
Carrick AC duo Michelle Lannon and Ann Wynne, North Leitrim AC's Susanne O'Beirne and former North Leitrim AC athlete Michael Cornyn all won gold medals at the 123.ie sponsored National Masters Indoors in Athlone on Sunday.
For Michelle Lannon, it was an especially golden day as the Carrick AC athlete took home two gold medals in the W50 1,500m and 3,000m for an impressive double. The Boyle resident clocked an impressive 5.03.11 while she clocked an equally impressive time of 10.54.77 in the longer 3,000m, coming home a clear winner in both events.
Her Carrick AC clubmate and fellow Boyle resident Ann Wynne won the W55 800m in a swift 2.41.51 to keep her unbeaten streak going in the event after winning the title indoors and outdoors last year.
Michael Cornyn, running for Dunboyne AC, went from Saturday's Leitrim Sports Star Awards to Athlone on Sunday and it proved a worthwhile trip as he won the M60 800m in a time of 2.31.31 in a very tight race, finishing less than two seconds ahead of Ennis' Pat Ryan.
Michael also brought home a silver medal in the 400m in a time of 69.69 on a very busy day.
