Motorists losing wing mirrors at narrow Leitrim bridge, meeting hears

Motorists have lost wing mirrors at Leckaun Bridge on the R278 in North Leitrim, prompting calls for a safety assessment.
Safety concerns have been raised over a bridge in North Leitrim where multiple motorists have lost their wing mirrors due to the narrow width of the bridge and road.
The issue at Leckaun Bridge on the R278 was raised by Cllr James Gilmartin at a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District. He called on the Council to carry out a safety assessment of the bridge in the townland of Cornalaghta, Newtownmanor, and implement appropriate safety measures.
“A number of near-miss incidents have been reported at this location due to the narrow width of the road and the current line markings approaching the bridge,” his motion stated.
“These factors can create difficulties for motorists and consider measures such as improved signage, enhanced road markings, traffic calming and any other engineering solutions deemed necessary to improve road safety,” the motion concluded.
A response from the Roads department noted that the bridge underwent structural repairs in 2015 and parapet upgrades in 2017. However, the bridge will continue to be monitored, and accident statistics will be reviewed.
It may then be considered for inclusion on the list of proposed low-cost safety schemes, which could include line marking and signage to increase awareness.
Cllr Gilmartin said increased awareness was needed, particularly on the Sligo side, and suggested considering a yield sign to help improve safety.
All councillors supported the motion.
