Calls are growing to remove decommissioned lighting columns in Drumkeeran after residents complained they have become an ongoing eyesore.

Residents in a North Leitrim village are growing frustrated with unsightly decommissioned lighting columns, despite numerous requests for their removal.

Cllr Pádraig Fallon raised the issue at a recent meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, following up on a previous motion and repeated requests.

“Can I ask Leitrim County Council for an update on when the decommissioned lights which need removing at Sheena, Drumkeeran will be removed, and also when an extra light required or existing light recommissioned has been sought,” Cllr Fallon’s motion stated.

He noted the issue has been ongoing for a number of years, with the lights having not worked since they were replaced in November 2022.

“Residents have been asking what is going to happen with the lighting poles,” said Cllr Fallon. He noted he was aware that the Council had been corresponding with Electric Skyline, a public lighting contractor, but reiterated that the poles are “extremely unsightly,” and asked that the Council continue to engage with the company to get the matter resolved.

His motion was seconded by Cllr Mary Bohan, who agreed the poles are unsightly and said, “Especially now as we have very active tidy towns and housing estate groups, they can’t understand why these unsightly poles are there that aren’t serving any purpose.”

The motion was also seconded by Cllr Felim Gurn.

A response from the Roads Department confirmed that the issue will be logged with Electric Skyline.
