Much-loved Irish folk musician Dónal Lunny, known for his immense contribution to Irish music, passed away on October 23 at the age of 79.
The renowned musician spent a lot of time in Leitrim, where he played a significant role in the local Irish music scene through his involvement in several projects. He performed alongside well-known Leitrim musicians, including Eleanor Shanley, Fionnuala Maxwell and Charlie McGettigan.
Dónal was heavily involved in the Leitrim Equation, a cultural residency programme run by Leitrim County Council.
For the third instalment of the project, he performed alongside John Carty and the late Séamus Begley. During their residency in Leitrim, they collaborated with schools and community groups, releasing the Leitrim Equation 3 album in 2013 before taking the project on tour in 2016.
Dónal is being remembered nationally for his pivotal role in reviving Irish traditional music and developing the folk scene.
Here in Leitrim, he will be fondly remembered for the time he spent in the county and the many musical memories he created with people throughout the wider community.
In a tribute to Dónal on Facebook, Eleanor Shanley wrote, “The world is an emptier place now. We’ve lost a true genius and an absolute gentleman.
“I was honoured to have Donal produce my first solo album and worked with him on many projects since then. But most of all so honoured to call him a friend.”
His funeral will take place in St. Conleth's Parish Church in Newbridge on Saturday, October 31.
