It was a busy weekend for volunteers of the Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue team as they were called to two scenes in the region.

Two stranded walkers were rescued from Diarmuid and Gráinne’s Cave in the Glenniff Valley, which borders Sligo and Leitrim.

Two walkers who were on holidays in the area were ascending to the cave when they became cragfast.

Both walkers, cold and nervous due to the exposed and steepness of the location were initially assessed by a medics as hypothermia was a concern. The pair of walkers felt they could not descend safely, so the mountain rescue team put together a rope system to assist the walkers back down the mountain.

The two walkers were shaken by the experience but were uninjured.Members of An Garda Siochána were also involved in the rescue operation.

Then on Sunday, April 16, Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team assisted Nothern Ireland Mountain Rescue Team with a call out on Cuilcagh Mountain on the Cavan Fermanagh border.

A Member of a group of walkers hiking on the South Side of Cuilcagh slipped and fell. Unfortunately, this resulted in a delibilating lower leg injury which rendered the casualty unable to move.
