Surge in Leitrim energy grant applications as homeowners plan warmer homes

National retrofit demand hits record levels as Leitrim households seek warmer, cheaper-to-run homes
Leitrim homeowners are being encouraged to begin their home energy upgrade journey over the summer months as demand for Government-backed retrofit grants continues to rise across the county.
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) said more than 112 grant applications have already been received from Leitrim homeowners so far this year, with 150 home energy upgrades supported in the first three months of 2026 alone.
Nationally, SEAI processed a record 25,000 grant applications following the introduction of enhanced supports earlier this year.
The agency is now urging householders in Leitrim to start planning upgrades ahead of the winter months, warning that contractor availability and grant application processing can take time.
SEAI said homeowners who begin the process early can take advantage of current grant supports, spread the cost of works over time, and ensure upgrades are completed before colder weather arrives.
A wide range of grants are currently available for measures including attic and wall insulation, windows and doors, solar panels, and heat pumps. Fully funded upgrades are also available under the Warmer Homes Scheme for eligible households.
Chief Executive of SEAI, William Walsh, said the expanded grants are aimed at helping families reduce their reliance on fossil fuels while making homes warmer and cheaper to run.
“At a time when energy costs are a concern for many households, SEAI is here to help Leitrim homeowners,” he said.
“With our new and expanded grant options, you can reduce your home’s reliance on fossil fuels and get the benefits of a warmer and healthier house.”
Mr Walsh said there had “never been a better time” to retrofit a home, whether homeowners choose to carry out works gradually or complete a full home energy upgrade.
He added that the grants can help reduce energy bills while improving comfort levels in homes.
SEAI’s latest campaign coincides with a wider Government initiative promoting energy-saving supports and advice for households looking to cut costs and improve energy efficiency.
