Suspended prison sentence for threatening behaviour

A 26-year old Mohill man who pleaded guilty to two public order offences was handed a two months prison sentence, suspended for two years, when he appeared before Carrick-on-Shannon District Court.
Bernard McDonagh, 33 Hyde Terrace, Mohill pleaded guilty to threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour on June 4, 2022 at Hyde St, Mohill and to being intoxicated in public on March 18, 2022 at Main St, Mohill.
Sgt Ronan Mooney said that on June 4 last while dealing with a call he entered the premises at 33 Hyde Terrace. As he was talking to the defendant's father, a car pulled up outside and the rear seat occupant of the car, a cousin of the defendant, got out.
Mr McDonagh ran down the path and took up a boxing stance and they both started throwing boxes. The other man ran and Mr McDonagh chased him but was intercepted by gardai.
On March 18 last at 2am on Main Street a large crowd had gathered outside a fast food outlet. A highly intoxicated Mr McDonagh was seen throwing a can of beer at the door of the premises.
Mr McDonagh has five previous convictions, three for public order, one for criminal damage and one for theft.
Solicitor, Martin Burke, said alcohol is clearly a problem for him and he was going to have to deal with it or it was going to land him into even more trouble.
Judge Vincent Deane sentenced Mr McDonagh to two months in prison, suspended for two years, on the threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour charge and took into consideration the intoxication charge.
