A peaceful protest by Ukrainian nationals living in the Leitrim area took place in Carrick-on-Shannon last Saturday, March 5.

As the people gathered at the Town Clock to raise awareness about the war in Ukraine and to highlight what is happening in their country, their protest was interrupted by three men shouting pro-Russian comments at them.

As the three men attempted to drive away from the scene, the Ukrainian group prevented their car from proceeding down Main Street and the Gardai were called.

Some of the Ukrainian group surrounded the car until the Gardai arrived and interviewed the occupants.

The group then continued with their peaceful protest.

A growing number of Ukrainian people are arriving in Ireland and local people have been helping to collect items for people fleeing the war.

Efforts are also being made locally to source accommodation for Ukrainian people coming to the Leitrim area.
