Homes across Carlow now benefiting from a more reliable water supply after essential waterworks

The upgraded network now provides a more dependable water supply for residents in Rathvilly
Homes and businesses on Phelan Street in Rathvilly, county Carlow, are now benefiting from a stronger, more reliable water supply following the completion of essential watermain upgrade works by Uisce Éireann.
Delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, the works involved the decommissioning of ageing watermains and the installation of 230 metres of new modern pipes along Phelan Street. These upgrades reduce leakage, improve drinking water quality and strengthen the local water network.
In older properties, water connections were often made of iron or lead and, due to their age and deteriorating condition, had become a significant source of leakage and reduced service levels.
Many of these connections were shared between neighbouring properties, making leaks difficult to detect and repair, often resulting in low water pressure for groups of homes when issues arose.
The upgraded network now provides a more dependable water supply for residents, improving water quality at the tap, reducing the risk of bursts and interruptions, and ensuring treated drinking water is protected and used where it is needed most.
Welcoming the completion of the works, Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said the project delivers meaningful benefits for the Rathvilly community:
