Motorists being caught speeding ‘like fish in a barrel’ on busy Carlow road

The issue was raised by Cllr Fergal Browne at the May plenary meeting of Carlow County Council
Motorists are being caught speeding “like fish in a barrel” on a busy road in County Carlow, a council meeting has heard.
The issue was raised by Fine Gael councillor Fergal Browne at the May plenary meeting of Carlow County Council.
Cllr Browne argued that the speed limit of 60km/h on the Eastern Relief Road in Carlow town is too low.
He questioned what the rationale behind the speed limit was, given the road is quite wide and relatively new.
Cllr Browne continued by asking whether a speed limit of 80km/h would be more suitable.
He noted that the Dublin Road was narrower and that it has a speed limit of 80km/h.
He also argued that the current speed limit signage on the road is “inadequate” and suggested that more signs be installed as an interim measure.
Cllr Browne concluded by saying that “people are being caught [speeding] like fish in a barrel” on the road.
In response, Pádraig O'Gorman, Director of Services at Carlow County Council, said that the Eastern Relief Road can be looked at as part of the council’s upcoming speed limit review.
