Progress has been made in making Carlow more accessible following a short film that highlighted the #EoinClearThePath campaign.
A new pedestrian crossing has been completed at Governey Square and Castle, a place mentioned in the film as difficult for those with mobility issues.
“Eoin’s daily journey through the town highlighted the very real difficulties faced by wheelchair users when paths, kerbs and crossing points are not accessible. The #𝐄𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡 campaign called for practical action,” a post in the Facebook group All About Carlow says.
“This crossing represents progress, and Eoin deserves enormous credit for helping bring attention to a problem that affected not only him, but many others,” it continued.
The short film was made by Garyhill Films in an appeal for help from the local County Council.
The video was in October of 2025 and at the end, he asks any member of the Carlow County Council to help him, knowing that they can “do better.”
It appears they have done so with the new crossing featuring dropped kerbs, tactile paving, and a clearly defined crossing surface.
Despite progress being made, there is still a lot more that can be done, with questions being raised about whether the crossing is as safe as it could be.
“The crossing is positioned close to a bend and junction. Buildings, poles and other street furniture may affect the line of sight between pedestrians and approaching drivers. That needs to be carefully assessed, particularly for anyone who may take longer to cross,” the Facebook post says.
“Progress deserves recognition, but accessibility must be measured by how well something works, not simply by the fact that it has been built,” it added.
Carlow TD Jennifer Murnane O’Connor was a big advocate for making the town more accessible and safe, and commended the news regarding the crossing.
Eoin has received huge support online for highlighting the issues and being the driver of change in Carlow.
