Works will begin on St Dympna’s Hospital “very soon” and should be completed by the end of the year, according to a Carlow Minister

Works are set to begin on the Injury Unit at St Dympna’s Hospital in Carlow “very soon” and should be completed by the end of the year.

So says Carlow Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor who shared the news on Facebook yesterday.

A new contractor has been appointed, which will oversee the refurbishment of rooms at the hospital.

“Work should begin very soon and completed later this year,” Minister Murnane O’Connor said.

The Local Injury Unit, which cost the State in the region of €1.9 million, will provide an alternative care route for patients with minor injuries.

“This is a much needed facility for the people of the Carlow and it is one I have been working on during my time as a TD and later as a Minister in the Department of Health,” Minister Murnane O’Connor wrote online.

The new unit will operate under St. Luke’s General Hospital, but will be based on the ground floor of St Dymna’s Hospital, where the former St. Anne’s Ward and staff training room areas originally were.

It will be equipped to treat conditions such as broken bones, sprains and strains, from knees to toes and collarbone to fingertips, minor facial injuries (including oral, dental and nasal injuries), minor scalds and burns, wounds, bites, cuts, grazes and scalp lacerations, small abscesses and boils, splinters and fish hooks, objects stuck in eyes, ears or nose, and minor head injuries (fully-conscious patients, who did not have loss of consciousness or vomit after the head injury).

“Carlow town and the surrounding areas has a growing population and it is crucial that we have the proper health facilities in place. I look forward to the opening of the Injury Unit,” Minister Murnane O’Connor’s post concludes.
