Death Trap?

Are Kilkenny Corporation members determined to create a potential death trap in the city?

At their meeting on Monday they once again turned down a joint plan of two engineers for the widening of a road junction.

Members insisted that the widening be done their way despite a warning from Borough engineer Mr J Frawley - ‘you will be forming a traffic hazard, perhaps even a death trap’.

At a previous meeting a plan drawn up by Mr Frawley and County Surveyor, Mr JG Coffey for the widening of the entrance to Riverside Drive at Bishop’s Hill was decisively beaten on a vote.

The engineers’ plan involves taking portions of two front gardens on the right hand side of the entrance, but the majority of Corporation members want the widening done at the other side.

CU To Set Up Community Store?

Thousands of people in Kilkenny may soon own their own store. If St Canice’s Credit Union, Kilkenny has its way it projected 7,000-plus membership will be buying at rock-bottom prices in a Credit Union shop by 1976.

At the annual meeting in the Metropole Hotel at the weekend, outgoing president Patrick Power told members a co-operative CU store was now feasible.

He explained that such a shop would help combat spiralling prices and eliminate many middlemen who had been exploiting housewives for too long.

Mr Power called on the Board of St Canice’s CU to investigate the co-op idea. It is understood that a special action committee will be formed next year.

Mr Power feels that the members would be fully behind the co-op. He explained that it would be in the interest of members to support it. It would be non-profit making and prices would be down as the middle man would be gone.

Telephone Needed

Over 270 residents of Larchfield, St Fiacre’s Place, Edenvale Close and Garden Villas, Kilkenny, have signed a petition calling on the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs to provide a telephone kiosk in the area.

A copy of the petition is to be sent to Kilkenny Corporation with a request that they press their case to the Department.

There has been considerable agitation in the area for a public kiosk for some time as the nearest public telephone is a considerable distance away.
