Archive: 'Hands off!' - Kilkenny sends warning to Waterford

MARCH 8, 1974
Any moves by Waterford Corporation to take over part of South Kilkenny will be bitterly opposed by Kilkenny County Council.
This was the feeling at Monday’s meeting of the Council.
Mr T Walsh had proposed that ‘in view of the intention of Waterford Corporation to seek permission from the Minister for Local Government to have part of South Kilkenny taken into the Waterford Borough, the Council should take all steps possible to prevent this from happening’.
Senator B Aylward said there was no reason why the County Council could not build houses in South Kilkenny.
Waterford Corporation wanted to extend their borough boundary to take in part of South Kilkenny, but they should be vehemently opposed.
BUS DRIVERS TO STRIKE
A strike threat by school bus drivers could mean that young boys and girls in rural areas will have to walk miles to school from March 20.
At a meeting of area secretaries of the School Bus Drivers (CIE) section of the Federation of Rural Workers in the Ormonde Hotel, Nenagh, it was unanimously decided to serve strike notice. CIE have been told that drivers will not sit behind the wheel from March 20.
They are looking for an increase in wages and for better working conditions. The present rate for men and women drivers is between £9 and £15. The drivers are demanding a basic of £25 a week retrospective to January 15, 1974.
A spokesman for the group pointed out that the one-man buses driven by members were not always in the best mechanical condition.
“Our members have to act as nurses to little boys and girls of four and five,” he pointed out. “They have to mind children and clean the buses inside and out.”
GOLDEN WEDDING
Four life-long friends who went to school together and were married in a double wedding ceremony have celebrated their golden wedding anniversaries.
Mr and Mrs Richard Dunne, High Street, Graignamanagh and Mr and Mrs James Roche, Tinnahinch, marked the occasion with a special dinner for over 200 guests at the Springhill Hotel.
Mr and Mrs Dunne have five children and 14 grandchildren, while the Roches have seven children and 21 grandchildren.
The dinner was also attended by the best man and bridesmaids for both weddings.
Mr Johnny McDonald and Miss May Bennett attended for the Roche couple while the Dunnes were attended by Patrick Dunne and Miss Kitty Kinsella.
