CK United have made a high-profile signing from the Kilkenny & District League

CK United have made an eye-catching first signing ahead of a new third tier League of Ireland competition beginning next month.

Kilkenny & District League Premier Division top scorer Emmet Nugent has signed on the dotted line for the club’s first team.

The ex-Fort Rangers and Freebooters striker is expected to be just one of several well known players signed from Kilkenny, Carlow and beyond.

The new FAI National League’s fifteen founding members will be split into three groups of five, with Killarney Celtic, Newbridge Town FC and UCC Soccer making up the rest of Group 3 alongside United and Villa.

The winners of these will face off in the final in November to conclude the shortened first season which will be followed by the first full National League campaign next February.

Team manager Tom O’Connor welcomed the signing, stating Emmet is “a proven goalscorer with a fantastic attitude and a strong desire to win.”

The club broke the news on Wednesday morning.

“Emmet brings valuable League of Ireland experience, having played senior football for Wexford FC in the First Division, where he showcased his quality and eye for goal,” a club spokesperson said.

“Since then, he has established himself as one of the most prolific attacking players in the junior game. Last season, he scored over 40 goals in all competitions for Fort Rangers.

“Coming from a strong football family in Kilkenny, Emmet has grown up around the game and brings with him a winning mentality, professionalism and a relentless work ethic,” the spokesperson continued.

“Comfortable across the forward line, with an ability to make things happen in the final third. We're thrilled to have a player of Emmet's calibre and experience joining the squad as we continue to strengthen ahead of the new season.

“Everyone at the club wishes Emmet a warm welcome, and we can't wait to see him in action.”
