Cllr Maurice Shortall particularly welcomed the proposed provision of four one-bed units, which he stated are 'in short supply'
Kilkenny County Council has given notice of its intention to carry substantial redevelopment works at 62 Barrack Street, Castlecomer, County Kilkenny.
The proposed development consists of the refurbishment of the existing two storey structure and change of use of the ground floor commercial unit to provide a 2-bedroom dwelling.
Also planned is the demolition and partial demolition of existing rear extensions and outbuildings and the construction of two two-storey structures on site providing four one-bedroom apartments.
The proposed development, according to the local authority, will be delivered on a phased basis.
Phase one is to consist of the refurbishment and change of use of the protected structure, to include demolition and partial demolition of rear returns and outbuildings.
Phase two is to consist of the construction of four one-bedroom units and associated landscaping.
The plans have been welcomed by local councillor Maurice Shortall who described it as 'great news'.
"This is why local authorities will be front-runners tackling the housing crisis," he stated.
"One bedroom apartments in particular are in short supply."
