Kilkenny city councillor Eugene McGuinness recently called upon his working background as a tradesman to help a constituent with a very peculiar problem.

Just a few days after Christmas, the councillor received a call from a distraught woman who was looking for the number of the relevant emergency services as her cat had fallen behind the cylinder in the hot-press.

Cllr McGuinness, thinking it would be 'a simple job of removing a few shelves', decided to call to the house himself in a bid to free the feline.

Upon assessing the situation, he discovered that the cat 'had got itself wedged behind a large cylinder, in an upside down position and finding it difficult to breathe'.

"Unfortunately the cylinder was too close to the ceiling to remove the cat from the top so there was only one way to get the very distressed cat out and that was through the wall," Cllr McGuinness said.

"Fortunately as I served my time as a carpenter I had the tools necessary and after breaking through the wall, we were able to rescue a much relieved cat, admittedly a little shaken but glad to be alive."placeholder image

Just like any tradesman would do, Cllr McGuinness then repaired the wall when he was finished (pictured above) with nothing needed only a coat of paint.

Sharing the story on social media, he quipped: "For any of you thinking of entering local politics, just stop and think a minute, the work of your local councillor is wide and varied."
