Gardaí had a busy time attempting to establish details and facts relating to a vehicle and its driver earlier today (Tuesday) in Kilkenny.

"One of our lads came across this vehicle off duty this morning when he was filling up with fuel," a garda spokesperson said.

"The truck, which had no front number plate by its sign writing, purported to be doing roof and groundwork but had no proper business information on the side. Typically such operators are calling door to door 'encouraging' people to get works carried out.

"Assistance came from Roads Policing who thought an indepth scrutiny of documents was in order. After several untruths it was established that the driver was driving the truck on a car licence (as it had been plated down to 3,500kg - impossible).

"The driver also only had social, domestic and pleasure insurance. The vehicle had a UK MOT that was expired by 1 year and tax 9 months.

"Detective Branch also came to the scene to properly establish identities. The truck was then seized under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act.

"It was subsequently taken to a weighbridge (where it weighed 7300kg), and a busy day in court awaits the driver."
