Emergency spending hits bridge budget hard in South Kilkenny

Emergency bridge repair works conducted over the course of this year have made a huge impact to the bridge budget of Piltown Municipal District.

Councillors in the area were informed of the news earlier this week by Area Engineer, Stan Cullen.

As a result, bridge works at the Pil River, Harristown and Ballyverneen have been deferred until next year.

Notably, back in April, a bridge located on the R704 dividing the parishes of Mullinavat and Tullogher collapsed.

Local councillor Fidelis Doherty remarked at the time that she was taken aback by the sight of the bridge in ruins when passing the scene.

"The stones strewn across the road were as big as tables," she said at the time.

Workers salvaged as much of the bridge as possible and even reconstructed its parapet, but overall this was a major unplanned expense.
