The local soccer season is beginning to heat up and Evergreen, despite not sitting on top of the St Canice’s Credit Union Premier Division, look in pole position to retain their league title.

The city side have only played five games in the top tier thus far but they have come away with maximum points every time they’ve taken to the field.

Evergreen’s latest success came at the expense of Bridge United at the Kells Road last Sunday morning.

The hosts grabbed a 3-0 win with Mikey Drennan grabbing a pair of goals and Andrew Wall also scoring from a Jamie Owens cross into the box.

Evergreen now sit just one point off league pacesetters Deen Celtic and have three games in hand on the Castlecomer side but they will be absent from league fare this coming weekend as they make the trip west to take on Westport United in the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup.

Evergreen are the one remaining Kilkenny side in the prestigious cup competition as the race to the Aviva Stadium reaches fever pitch in the next few weeks.

Deen Celtic’s recent draw at home to Callan United helped keep them top if the table but they would have seen that as two points dropped especially when a side like Evergreen is closing them down.

With Evergreen away in Mayo this weekend, Deen Celtic will have the chance to extend their advantage when they take on Bridge United in Castlecomer on Sunday morning.

The rest of this week’s premier division action sees Freebooters take on Highview Athletic on Saturday night while Callan United meet Clover United the following day.

Away from the top division, there was a host of activity in the Junior KCLR Scoreline.ie Division One League where there were wins for Tullaroan, Freshford Town and Evergreen B while Castlewarren Celtic and Ormonde Villa shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Watershed.

That all means that Evergreen B continue to lead the way with Lions, Castlewarren Celtic and Ormonde Villa making up the rest of the top four in the division.

Freshford Town, Tullaroan, Evergreen C and River Rangers make up the bottom half.

Freebooters B are then the ones making all the running in the Junior Division 2 Emerald Tiles League after winning all 10 games thus far of which their most recent success was 3-0 against Castlewarren Celtic B.

Harry Maher , Billy Wall, Filip Nowakowski all got the goals for the second string side while ‘Booters first team also had a big win when they claimed a penalty shootout success over Balscadden in the Leinster Junior Cup.

Elsewhere in the Division Two League, Newpark had an away day victory at Highview Athletic B’s expense.
