In 1985, St Canice's Credit Union celebrated its 21st anniversary with significant events and developments.
In 1986, the credit union temporarily relocated to a unit in the Arcade on High Street while renovations to its High Street office were underway. That year, a dividend of 6.75% was paid to members, and shares reached a total of £6 million. The credit union also sponsored the production of a special map for schools, highlighting various historical spots in Kilkenny.
Renovations
During the late 1980s, renovations on High Street were completed, resulting in a beautiful building that provided an improved space for members. The premises won two awards in the 1987 Keep Kilkenny Beautiful competition: the Best Overall Achievement Award and Best Traditional Commercial Front - it was even featured on RTE TV during Arts Week in 1987.
The new computer service became fully operational, allowing members to access real-time information about their shares and loan accounts.
A notable highlight was the sponsorship of the Kilkenny camogie team, which achieved a remarkable four-in-a-row victory. The credit union also supported the launch of a book about James Freney, a notorious Kilkenny highwayman from the previous century. Prizes for free draws during this period included holidays and tickets to concerts.
In 1989, the silver jubilee was marked with several commemorative events. A plaque was erected on the St Vincent de Paul House in Butts Green, the original home of the credit union. Additionally, a grove of trees was planted on the banks of the Breagagh at Blackmill, and a pilot budget scheme was introduced which proved to be very popular with members.
May 1991 marked the beginning of a long partnership between the credit union and Kilkenny GAA, with the sponsorship of the senior hurling championship, a partnership that continues to this day.
In 1992, the credit union began sponsoring the Kilkenny and District Soccer League, another enduring partnership. Also, in 1992, loans reached £16.4 million, savings £16.8 million, and assets increased to £19.82 million, with a dividend of 7% paid to members.
Strong support
In 1994 St Canice’s Credit Union celebrated their 30th anniversary, a milestone celebrating three decades of growth, community support, and dedicated financial services for its members. St Canice’s had continued its strong community support, maintaining involvement in Arts Week, Confederation Week, the senior hurling championship, Battle of the Bands, and both the K&DL premier and under-15 soccer leagues.
In this anniversary year, St Canice’s supported the Abbey Business Centre, which helps people start their own businesses by giving them a place to work until they can stand on their own. The credit union also helped restore the third house of the Rothe House complex, one of Kilkenny’s most beautiful and historic buildings.
