Funding allocated for rural roads and laneways in Kilkenny

Kilkenny has been allocated €280,597 for repairs and improvement works on rural roads and laneways in addition to the €361,156 that was already allocated this year.
The announcement, made recently by Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys, is part of a funding package of almost €16 million divided among local authorities throughout the country. Local councillor Andrew McGuinness has welcomed the news.
"The funding, under the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS), will support the continued improvement of non-public roads and lanes that are not normally maintained by local authorities," said Cllr McGuinness.
"I hope now that the backlog of requests to have rura lanes and roads repaired and upgraded can be dealt with in a prioritised way. Such roads represent a vital piece of infrastructure for rural residents - providing access to homes, farms and businesses, as well as outdoor amenities such as our lakes and rivers."
The announcement means that almost €30 million has been allocated under the Local Improvement Scheme this year alone and almost €130 million has been invested through LIS since the scheme was re-introduced in 2017.
