The new speed limits are due to come into place in the first week of February

A number of new speed limit changes come into effect in County Kilkenny from today (Friday, February 7).

Default speed limits on rural local roads have decreased from 80km/h to 60 km/h. Later in the year the speed limits in built up areas including housing estates and town centres will reduce to 30 km/h.

Carlow-Kilkenny TD Jennifer Murnane O'Connor relayed some details over social media:

"Default speed limits on rural local roads will decrease from 80km/h to 60km/h and these limits will come into effect on Friday the 7th of February 2025!

"New speed limit signs will replace existing ones to reflect this change. The meaning of the Rural Speed Limit sign (a white circle with three diagonal black lines) will change from 80km/h to 60km/h as well.

"Later in 2025, the speed limit in urban cores, which include built up areas as well as housing estates and town centres, will reduce to 30km/h. The speed limit on national secondary roads will also reduce from 100km/h to 80km/h."
