Tramore Racecourse was the venue for last weekend’s All-Ireland Juvenile uneven ages and Novice cross-country championships. Fields of athletes, rather than the usual groups of horses, traversed the hilly, tough course working towards podium placings. The mild December weather was a perfect attribute to the event, with many Kilkenny athletes thriving on the almost home advantage. Six individual, one club set and one set of county medals, along with three medals as part of the Leinster teams, were won by the county’s athletes, making up a total of 19 medals for their efforts. Individual medals were won by Daniel Greene (under-13), Pia Langton (under-19), Charlotte Carpendale (under-19), Ruairi McEvoy (under-19), Callum Barron (under-19) and Hannah Kehoe (novice). With no under-11 girls qualifying from the county, the mantle for representation in this age category was left to the boys. For Kilkenny most of the boys were also competing in their first nationals. Leading the Kilkenny brigade was nine-year-old Huw Morgan (St Senan’s) who ran his heart out to finish a highly creditable 49th place. Huw will be eligible for this race again next year. Behind Huw, Daniel McIntyre and Daniel Quinn (both Kilkenny City Harriers - KCH) finished 51st and 66th respectively. The remaining three scorers on the county team were Cillian Maher (KCH, 101), Henry Kelly (Gowran, 148), Isaac Burns (KCH, 127). Their cumulative score gave Kilkenny an eighth place finish in the county section. Galway were the winners. Interestingly they did not have any athlete in the top 12. While many would love to see the Kilkenny boys in the top 12, this does not mean they cannot be in the future. Athletes who finish down the field in this age group often go on to become highly competitive in the older ages and may even make internationals as juniors and seniors. Many existing Kilkenny internationals have been in the 100s at under-11 level. Gowran’s Orla O’Keeffe, fresh from her sixth place finish in the under-12 race in Castle Irvine,
