Operation Iompair was conducted by members of the Kilkenny and Waterford Roads Policing Units

The Kilkenny and Waterford Roads Policing Units of An Garda Síochana teamed up for a joint operation earlier this week.

Operation Iompair uses an HGV tractor unit (spotter) working alongside marked and unmarked catcher units. The aim was to detect distracted driving and other offences.

“In all, 51 offences were detected including 46 mobile phone FCPNS and 5 Seatbelt detections,” a garda spokesperson said.

“We make no apologies for using undercover units to detect Distracted Driving and other offences, be it on the open road using a HGV or similar town based operations using beat and pushbike.

“The people risking their and everybody else's lives will not do this in front of a marked patrol car but do need to be caught,” they concluded.
