Glenmore Camogie Club hosted a wonderful and a very deserving send off for Mia Griffin last Friday evening in Pairc na Ratha, Glenmore GAA grounds as she heads to the Olympics in Paris with her team to compete in the women’s pursuit track cycling team.

Mia was overwhelmed by the attendance of well wishers, young and old.

There were lots of tricolours on display and lots of best wishes from all the kids on their homemade posters.

PJ Griffin, the camogie club chairperson - who happens to be Mia’s dad - spoke on behalf of the club and his family. He mentioned it was a great honour and a very special moment for Mia and that no matter where life takes Mia, he always reminds her to never forget where you started and where you come from.

PJ presented Mia with a beautiful plaque from the club and some were passed onto Mrs Breda Griffin, Mia’s grandmother who was also in attendance.

Breda is also one of the founding members of Glenmore camogie club.

Mia thanked everyone for coming and that she was overwhelmed by the support and to work hard at everything you do regardless of what that may be.

Mia is a former camogie star with the club and everyone in attendance wished her the best of luck in Paris and how proud they are to have an Olympian in their parish.

The Glenmore native has been selected for the Women’s Team Pursuit competition, joining forces with Lara Gillespie, Alice Sharpe, Kelly Murphy and reserve Erin Creighton.

The cycling will be held at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome on the outskirts of the French capital with the action getting underway on August 6.
