A plaque is to be unveiled to mark the centenary of the completion of the ex-servicemen’s cottages in Callan.

Being one of the earlier schemes, 25 ex-servicemen cottages were completed in Callan, County Kilkenny, (23 at Skeaghacloran and two in Minnauns), in 1922 under the Board of Works for the Irish Local Government Board (LGB) (functioning between 1919 and 1923). They have always been affectionately known as the soldiers’ cottages.

Pioneering

In many ways, this scheme was a pioneering framework for the social housing schemes to come into the future.

The plaque will be unveiled at cottage No 22 (close to Brett Brothers) on Sunday at 2pm.
