Icon of SS Ciaran and Canice unveiled in Kilkenny Cathedral

An icon of St Ciaran and St Canice has been unveiled at St Canice’s Cathedral.
Friends of St Canice’s Cathedral commissioned an icon of Saints Ciaran and Canice for the Cathedral. Iconographer Ian Knowles was chosen for the commission which will hang in the Gash Chapel of the Cathedral.
After months of intricate work by Ian Knowles, Friends and the Cathedral are delighted to be able to have this wonderful piece on display for all to see when they go to worship and visit the Cathedral.
Beautiful Addition
Dean of St Canice’s, Stephen Farrell is “delighted to have such a beautiful addition to the cathedral. The depiction of the Patron of Ossory and the Founder of Kilkenny itself tell us about where we have come from, but the icon also says something profound about mission and about moving beyond ourselves, and so it shows us our future too.
“I know it will enrich the prayer lives of worshippers and pilgrims to the cathedral and I would encourage all who visit the cathedral to spend a few quiet moments with it”.A choral Christmas event in Kilkenny
“It’s fascinating how the saints press themselves on us,” artist, Ian Knowles said. “I must admit that a lot of the ancient mythology surrounding Irish saints is difficult spiritually for me to relate to, but I found that researching and painting these two saints unfolded those ancient tales in a most moving and inspiring way.”
