Kilkenny-based engineering group Entegro is extending its expertise in the design, build and operation of fibre telecommunications and network infrastructure into the renewable energy sector, with the acquisition of renewable energy specialist ACEL Energy.
The deal will see Entegro form a new entity, Entegro Energy. It also confirmed plans to scale its workforce from 200 to closer to 300 over the coming years.
The acquisition builds on Entegro’s established partnership with high- and medium-voltage engineering specialist Nahanagan Electrical. Entegro is headquartered on the edge of Kilkenny city, in Danville Business Park.
The investment and establishment of Entegro Energy brings complementary capabilities together under one roof with end-to-end expertise in delivering renewable generation, battery storage and high-voltage infrastructure solutions across Ireland and overseas.
The new entity also positions Entegro Energy as a trusted singular source with international expertise in the design, commission and operation of power systems and storage at scale. Revenue at Entegro has grown to over €60 million, with plans to take the company to over €100 million in the coming years.
The combined offering strengthens Entegro's coveted reputation in the energy market, while also enhancing its ability to deliver resilient, future-ready infrastructure for customers across the critical energy, telecommunications and data centre sectors.
The move comes as businesses and public sector organisations seek to future-proof and reduce energy costs, improve resilience and accelerate decarbonisation, all while managing increasing demands on the electricity network.
ACEL brings engineering-led expertise in solar PV, battery energy storage and demand management capabilities to the deal, including funded solutions that enable clients to adopt renewable energy with no upfront investment. The partnership with Nahanagan adds decades of experience in high- and medium-voltage engineering, from design and installation through to maintenance and 24/7 emergency response.
Together, under Entegro Energy, the combined business provides integrated services across renewable energy generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and high-voltage infrastructure solutions.
John Rooney, Group CEO, Entegro, said: “The board and I welcome the ACEL team to the Entegro group. This is another milestone for Entegro as we continue to build a multi-utility business across telecoms, power and infrastructure to meet the demands of Ireland and beyond.
“Entegro has always sat at the heart of critical infrastructure, so moving into energy is a natural next step rather than a departure. Bringing ACEL and Nahanagan together gives us the ability to design, commission and run energy systems end to end, from an Irish base and with a trusted team that keeps growing. That is the future we want to help build, and to build well.”
Barry Sherry, Managing Director at ACEL Energy said: “Declan McDonald and I built ACEL on engineering-led renewable generation and storage, and joining Entegro lets us do that at a scale we could not reach alone.
“Alongside Nahanagan's high-voltage expertise, we can now offer clients something this market has been missing: a single partner that can take a project from design and generation through to the infrastructure that powers it, and stay with them for the long term. It is an exciting platform to be part of, and our commitment to our existing clients is only stronger for it.”
The acquisition follows Entegro's strategy of adding specialist engineering capabilities in adjacent infrastructure sectors, while retaining the expertise, leadership and customer relationships that have made ACEL and Nahanagan successful. Energy sits naturally within a business already built around power systems, network infrastructure and technical real estate, the partners say.
ACEL Energy was founded by Barry Sherry and Declan McDonald, who join Entegro and will continue to lead the business, ensuring continuity for customers as the combined energy capability scales.
Entegro has grown into a business of more than €50 million in revenue, employing over 200 people and operating across Ireland, the UK and the United States. Its core business remains the design and build of fibre and telecommunications infrastructure, where Entegro is a delivery partner in the National Broadband Ireland programme, and that work continues to grow alongside the group's expansion into energy. From Irish roots to a growing global footprint, Entegro has built its reputation on the quality and reliability of the critical infrastructure it delivers.
