Kilkenny Camogie- Mooncoin edge past Danesfort to seal intermediate final place

Mooncoin are through to their second county intermediate final after edging a tight match against Danesfort.

The winners made a bright start in Thomastown, as Deirdre Walsh scored the first point for Mooncoin from a free in the fourth minute.

Then Danesfort scored three unanswered points through Niamh Davis (2) and Jill O’Brien.

Walsh tacked on a pointed free for Mooncoin, then Niamh Crowley equalised, 0-3 each.

Over the next few minutes, Mooncoin suffered a blow when they lost two players to injuries. However, they kicked on and went ahead when they were awarded a free in defence. Sarah Crowley picked out Jessica Roche who duly slotted over the bar.

Mooncoin’s new free taker, Aine Aylward equalised.

Emily Hughes pointed for Danesfort before Olivia Mahony closed out the first half scoring with a pointed free to leave Danesfort ahead 0-7 to 0-5 at the interval.

Three minutes into the second half, Mooncoin scored their sixth point through Niamh Crowley, then Aine Aylward shot the equaliser four minutes later.

Over the next ten minutes, both teams failed to register a score until Mooncoin went a point ahead from a Aine Aylward free.

Danesfort replied with two quick points from Niamh Davis and Olivia Mahony to take the lead once again.

In the 58th minute, Mooncoin were awarded a free on their own 65m line as Sarah Crowley stepped up and spilt the posts.

Aine Aylward scored the winning point from a free after Niamh Crowley had been fouled after playing the ball forward.

The referee blew the full-time whistle and Mooncoin were through to the intermediate county final against O’Loughlin Gaels.

The final will be played in John Locke Park, Callan on Saturday at 3pm.
