A Kilkenny councillor has hit out at those responsible for damaging a local sports facility, after floodlights and fencing were vandalised in an incident that has left the local community enraged.

In a video seen by Kilkenny Live, floodlights and fencing were damaged at Newpark AFC’s grounds in Kilkenny City, leaving the club and locals enraged.

“Only a day or two ago, we had vandals who visited this area here and as per usual, they’re not particularly interested in playing football or playing sports of any kind. They’re more interested in making sure your children can’t play those sports,” the independent councillor said.

“When they see kids getting on and making an effort it doesn’t make them happy because they’re only happy when they’re vandalising places like this,” he added.

“I don’t know what sort of satisfaction they get out of that,” Cllr McGuinness continued, adding, “what’s important to know is I can’t stop this, the guards certainly can’t stop it because they can’t be everywhere at one time and the club can’t stop it but if we work together we may be able to stop it.

“I’m asking for your help here. If anyone has any information regarding what happened here , would you please ring gardaí on a confidential line please,” the local councillor continued.

“We together have to stop this type of vandalism. It takes a huge amount of effort and money to put these facilities in place and it takes an even bigger effort from the committees, from the families and kids to keep it going,” he remarked.

“Here in Newpark, we have the facility and we are trying to enhance it, but unfortunately you’ll have these young thugs that will continue to do this type of damage.”
