Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow-Kilkenny, Deputy Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere, is urging farmers, horse owners and pet owners across Carlow and Kilkenny to take extra care during the current spell of hot weather and to remain vigilant as an Orange Fire Risk Warning remains in place.

Deputy Cleere said: “The high temperatures we are experiencing can pose serious risks to livestock, horses and pets if the proper precautions are not taken. Ensuring animals have constant access to fresh drinking water, adequate shade and avoiding unnecessary handling during the hottest part of the day can make a significant difference to their welfare.

He also reminded dog owners never to leave pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time, and to exercise dogs during the cooler morning or evening hours.

Deputy Cleere who is party spokesperson on Agriculture and Rural Affairs, also appealed to the public to be mindful of the heightened fire risk across rural areas.

“With dry conditions across Carlow and Kilkenny, everyone has a role to play in preventing wildfires. Please avoid lighting barbecues or open fires in high-risk areas and report any suspicious activity immediately. Farmers should also ensure fire breaks and firefighting equipment are ready where appropriate,” he said.

Finally, Deputy Cleere encouraged farmers and all outdoor workers to protect themselves by staying hydrated, wearing suitable clothing and sunscreen, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours where possible.

“By taking a few simple precautions, we can help protect our families, our animals and our countryside during this period of hot weather,” Deputy Cleere concluded.
